AI Augments Human Cognition for Enhanced Capabilities

Surrey’s Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) finds that training in real-time human-AI interaction (HAII), specifically in Interlingual Respeaking (IRSP), enhances language professionals’ cognitive abilities. This practice involves live subtitles created through collaboration between humans and speech recognition software. The 25-hour upskilling course on IRSP, involving 51 language professionals, showed improvements in executive functioning (EF) and working memory (WM). Dr. Anna-Stiina Wallinheimo emphasizes the advantage gained in the evolving language industry, while Dr. Elena Davitti underscores the need for continuous exploration in the face of AI advancements. The study, part of the SMART project, has been published in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence.
